When you have so many online passwords to remember, forgetting the password of your Yahoo Mail account is a common affair. If you ever find yourself facing issues accessing your Yahoo account, it can be because either you don’t remember your password or someone has hacked into your account and changed the password for it. In such a case, the best way to regain control of your account is by resetting or changing the password.

Recover Forgotten Yahoo Mail Password

There are numerous ways you can recover your Yahoo Mail password, such as through desktop, iPhone, as Android. Below you can find information on resetting your Yahoo Mail password on these various platforms and using account recovery options (both phone and email address).

ON DESKTOP

When You Don’t RememberYourYahoo MailPassword Or Your Account Has Been Hacked and You Are Unable Access It

  1. Open a web browser on your computer and go to the Yahoo Mail sign-in page. Enter your Yahoo User ID in the prompted field and click on the Next button.
  2. On the next screen, you will be asked to enter your password in the provided field. Here, you will need to click on the “Forgotten password?” option.
  3. As you will click on this option, you will be directed to the next screen where you will be given one of the Account Recovery options associated with your Yahoo account.

NOTE: Account recovery options comprise of PHONE NUMBER and EMAIL ADDRESS. These account recovery options help in the verification of the user’s identity as the rightful owner of the account when you are unable to find trouble accessing your account.

Recovering Yahoo Mail Account Through Phone Number

  1. On the next page, you will be shown your phone number (with missing digits). If you have access to the given phone number, you will need to click on it. As you will click on your phone number, you will be directed to the next screen where you will be prompted to enter a 6-character code sent to your mobile phone.
  2. After entering the code in the provided field, you will need to click on the Verify button.

NOTE: In case you don’t have access to the given phone number, you will need to get to the next account recovery option available. You are most likely to see your email address is shown on the screen.

Recovering Yahoo Mail Account Through Email Address

If you have access to the given email address on your screen, you will need to click on it.As you will click on your email address, you will be directed to the next screen where you will be prompted to enter an 8-character code sent to your email address.

NOTE: If you don’t have access to the displayed email address or phone number on your screen, you can click on the new “Scan QR code” option.

  1. After using your phone number or email address, when you receive the verification code, you will need to enter it in the provided field on the subsequent screen and click on the Verify button.
  2. If the code matches the one sent to your email address or phone, it will get verified successfully, you will be shown a success message on the next screen with the following two options:
    • Create a new password
    • Continue
  3. If you will click on the Continue option in the previous step, you will be taken to your Yahoo Mail account. However, if you will click on the “Create a new password” option, you will be directed to the next screen where you will be prompted to create a new password for your account.
  4. If you select the “Create a new password” option Enter the new password in the provided fields and click on the Continue button.

NOTE:

  • If you wish to create the new password later, you can click on the Continue button.
  • Whenever you create the password, make sure that the password is a combination of alphabets, numbers, and special characters. This is recommended because passwords with such combinations are difficult to guess or hack.
  1. On the next screen, you will be prompted to review your account recovery options. Review the options thoroughly and after making desired changes, click on the Looks Good button.
  2. Your Yahoo Mail account will be recovered successfully and you will be taken to Yahoo homepage and you will be able to access your account.

To Change Yahoo Mail Account Password

When You Are Able to Access Your Yahoo Mail Account But Find Suspicious Activities in it

While the above-mentioned steps can help you recover your Yahoo account when you have forgotten your password or your account has been hacked and you are unable to access it. However, sometimes, you may come to realize the fact later that your account has been hacked but you are still able to access your account. This is done by hackers in order to steal important information without letting you know that he is also having access to your account. If you find any suspicious activities occurring in your Yahoo Mail account, in such a case, it is strongly recommended to change the password of your account right away.

  1. Open a supported web browser on your computer and sign in to your Yahoo Mail account. Once you are logged in, click on your Profile Name located near the top-right corner of the window.
  2. From the drop-down menu, you will need to select the Account info option.
  3. In the Account info section, select the Account security option from the left-hand side panel.

NOTE: As you will click on the Account security option, you might be prompted to enter the password of your account. Enter the password to get access to the Account security section of your account.

  1. Under the Account security section, you will need to click on the Change password option. Clicking on this option will take you to the next screen for entering your new password.

NOTE: Complete the reCAPTCHA step if prompted to do so.

  1. Enter the new password in the prompted fields and click on the Continue button. The password of your Yahoo account will be changed.

Check the Recent Activity Page

After you have changed the password, you will need to check the recent activity that occurred in your account. To check the recent activity, you will need to follow these steps:

  1. In your Yahoo Mail account and click on your Profile Name located near the top-right corner of the window.From the drop-down menu, you will need to click on the Account info option.
  2. In the Account info section, click on the Recent activity option located near the left-hand side panel.Go through the recent activity that occurred in your account and correct them wherever required.
  3. Also, make sure to review your account recovery options in the Account security section. Update them if you wish to make the changes.
  4. Check the account settings and see if any changes were made to them.
  5. Check if any suspicious emails were sent or received using your Yahoo Mail account.

Reset Yahoo Mail Account Password on Mobile Apps (Android and iPhone)

NOTE: If you are looking to reset your Yahoo Mail account password using your Yahoo Mail application on Android or iPhone, unfortunately, the option is not available for the mobile application. You can reset the password using the same steps as mentioned-above on the mobile web browser if you wish to.

However, if you are looking to change the password using the Yahoo Mail app on Android or iPhone, follow these steps:

  1. Open Yahoo Mail app on your Android Mobile phone or iPhone and tap on the Menu icon (three horizontal lines).
  2. Next, you will need to tap on the Manage Accounts option. Then, select the Account info option and tap on the Security settings option.
  3. On the next screen, you will need to enter your security code and tap on the Change password option.
  4. Then, you will need to select the “I would rather change my password” option on the next screen.
  5. After that, enter your new password in the provided field and tap on the Continue option to confirm your action. The password for your Yahoo account will be changed.

Use Account Security Features to Protect your Yahoo Mail Account

To enhance the security of your Yahoo Mail account, you can make use of the security features provided by Yahoo. There are two features provided by Yahoo to enhance the security of your Yahoo account -Two-step verification and Account Key.

To Enable Two-Step Verification on Yahoo Account

Enabling two-step verification will make your Yahoo account send a security code to your phone number each time you are anyone (including you) tries to access your account from a new web browser or device. A person will need to enter the security code when trying to sign-in to your account. To enable this feature:

  1. Click on the Account info option under your Profile Name located near the top-right corner of the window.
  2. In the Account info section, you will need to click on the Account security option located on the left-hand side panel.

NOTE: When you will click on the Account security option, you might be prompted to enter the password of your account. Enter the password to get access to the Account security section of your account.

  1. In the Account security section, you will need to click on the Slider icon next to the Phone number option under the Two-step verification section. You will be directed to the next screen.
  2. On the next screen, enter your phone number which you wish to register for the two-step verification feature. Enter the phone number in the provided field and click on the Send SMS button to receive a verification code via text message, or you click on the Call me button to receive it via call.
  3. Once you receive the verification code, you will need to enter it on the subsequent screen and click on the Verify button. The Two-step verification feature will get activated for your Yahoo account.

NOTE:

  • If you access your Yahoo account on applications such as Outlook or iOS Mail, you will need to create a special app password as these applications do not support two-step verification.
  • For this, you will need to click on the Create app passwords option in step 5 and follow the on-screen instructions to generate an app password to access your Yahoo account on a particular app.
  • While there is also a Security key option available under the Two-step verification section, it is in the BETA mode at present. If you wish to use it, you can click on this option and follow the on-screen prompts to activate it.

To Use Yahoo Account Key

If you find it tough to remember the Yahoo Mail password and don’t wish to use the Two-step verification feature, you can secure your account using the Account key feature. Yahoo Account Key is also a great way to secure your account. This option allows you to use your mobile phone instead of a password to sign into your account. Once you will enablethis feature in your account, Yahoo will send a notification to your desired mobile device. You will need to approve access with a tap on your phone to sign in to your account. This way no one else can access your account. To enable the Account key feature, follow these steps:

NOTE: Before following the below-mentioned steps, make sure that you download a Yahoo app on your phone and sign in to it. Also, make sure that you are logged in to the same account for which you are enabling Yahoo Account Key.

  1. On a desktop browser, click on your Profile Name located near the top-right corner of the window.
  2. From the drop-down menu, click on the Account info option.
  3. In the Account info section, click on the Account security option located on the left-hand side panel.
  4. Under the Account security section, click on the “See how it works” button. You will be directed to the next page where you will need to select Send me a notification button.

NOTE: In case you don’t have a Yahoo app installed on your mobile device, you will see Done Let’s Try again button instead of Send me a notification button.

  1. Clicking on the Send me a notification will send a Sample Account Key notification on your mobile. Now, you will need to go to your mobile device and tap on the Yes option (Green right icon) to approve access to your Yahoo account.
  2. If you find the Account key working for you as expected, click on the Always use Yahoo Account Key button.
  3. On the next screen, you will need toenter a phone number and click on the Confirm button. The Yahoo Account Key feature will be enabled for your Yahoo account.
  4. From next time, you will be able to access your account using the Yahoo Account Key feature instead of entering the password.

NOTE: If you will enable the Yahoo Account key feature, you will notbe able to usethe use of two-step verification to secure your Yahoo Mail account.
